Breaking the Cycle: Behavioral Health and the Path to Justice Reform

Thank you for joining us at  ITUP’s first Justice-Involved and Behavioral Health virtual Policy Forum of 2024!

Equitable access to behavioral health services is critical for all Californians, but especially to address the existing high prevalence of mental health issues among individuals within the justice-involved population.  The cycle of incarceration and mental illness builds and fuels one another, further exacerbating existing symptoms and illnesses, thus resulting in worse health outcomes. This event will delve into California’s integration of behavioral health in prisons and jails, explored challenges, and highlighted key innovations and lessons learned.

During this event, attendees:

  • Received updates on how California is working to integrate behavioral health in prisons and jails in a trauma-informed way;
  • Learned how CalAIM implementation is impacting the justice-involved population; and
  • Engaged with panelists as they explored key considerations for shaping behavioral health policies for the justice-involved population.
