Each year, ITUP virtually hosts listening sessions around the state to connect with local health care and community-based partners on a deeper level about how state-level policy impacts California communities.
This year as California continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and embarks on historic coverage expansions to advance the promise of universal coverage, local champions forge ahead in CalAIM implementation and continue to move the needle forward in addressing systemic barriers to equitable health care. The policy and practice solutions for equitable, accessible, and quality health care needs within, across, and beyond these initiatives must be inclusive of community needs and voices.
In 2023, ITUP brought together regional health and health-related stakeholders to gain local insights on redetermination efforts. During the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE), the federal government temporarily waived Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) requirements for annual eligibility redeterminations. The easing of these rules helped people with Medi-Cal keep their health coverage during the pandemic. However, a new law ended Medicaid continuous coverage on March 31, 2023, with statewide redetermination efforts kicking off in February.
In addition to gaining insights on redetermination effort impacts on coverage, ITUP heard from you, the local leaders enhancing better health for your communities, on the policies and practices impacting the communities you serve so that ITUP can better support local health ecosystems.
Regional workgroup discussions inform ITUP’s policy work and future convenings, including panel topics and speakers at the ITUP annual statewide conference, Policy Forums, and publications.
*If you are unable to attend a workgroup in your area, feel free to register for another workgroup! ITUP Regional Workgroups are open to all interested parties.
