The Uninsured

California’s uninsured rate has steadily dropped since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act in 2014. In 2013, California’s uninsured rate was 17%.  In 2016, California’s uninsured rate reached a historic low of 7.1%, according to estimates from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS).  There are currently less than 3 million uninsured Californians.

Estimates from the NHIS represent the most current information on the uninsured.  Current estimates of California’s remaining uninsured vary from 7.1% to 8.6% depending on which source is used and the timeframe for the estimate.  All of these sources do reflect the dramatic drop in California’s uninsured rate post ACA implementation.
