The “We Are MEDI-CAL” healthcare rally will be held tomorrow, June 4th from 11 a.m. -4 p.m. on the West Side of the State Capitol in Sacramento. The rally is sponsored by the We Care for California Coalition, formed to “expand access to quality of health care for all Californians and to oppose further rate cuts to Medi-Cal.” We Care for California is the state’s largest coalition of health care providers and includes major statewide organizations, such California Medical Association, Blue Cross BlueShield of California, California Primary Care Association, Anthem Blue Cross, SEIU-UHW, California Association of Physician Groups, and Kaiser Permanente.
The event is expected to draw thousands of health care providers from across California to highlight the reimbursement cut to Medi-Cal providers. The rally is to urge both Legislators and Governor Brown to support companion bills SB 640 (Lara) and AB 900 (Alejo). Both SB 640 and AB 900 would stop the $1 billion cut to the Medi-Cal program. The cut to Medi-Cal provider payments would affect the health care access for both current Medi-Cal beneficiaries and individuals who will become newly eligible for the program under the ACA in 2014. With both the Legislator’s and Governor Brown’s support, SB 640 and AB 900 would put a stop to the proposed $1 billion Medi-Cal cuts in health care access. Without the needed support, the proposed cuts are set to take effect in July.
The all day rally is expected to attract a number of health professionals- including physicians, administrators, and health workers. Information will be presented on the public concerns and how the proposed Medi-Cal cuts will impact the rural and underserved communities. Increased awareness on how these cuts will affect California’s population will spark interest among all parties in attendance, especially policymakers and legislators.
