California Receives Level I Establishment Grant to Fund Exchange Development

Today, California received a $39M Level I Establishment Grant from HHS to being the creation of a state Exchange. The state had asked for $40.1M. The funds will be used to recruit staff and contract workers to create a three-year business plan, develop IT, and conduct consumer outreach. The one-year grant being on August 15, 2011. In June of 2012, California will apply for a Level II grant to fund the rest of the development and the first year of operation. After 2015, the Exchange must be self-supporting.
