State Considering “Early Innovator” Grant App

Last month, HHS announced competitive, two-year “Early Innovator” grants to be awarded to five states to help design and implement Information Technology (IT) systems that will be used to support operation of the Health Insurance Exchanges.

The state is currently considering whether to submit a grant proposal. The grant application deadline is December 22, 2010, and grants will be awarded by February 15, 2011.

Last Friday, we sent a letter expressing our support for California to submit an application. We believe that, as a leader in health reform implementation, if California applies for and is awarded a grant, we would have a head-start in developing an efficient and effective system of enrollment and renewal that works for all Californians.

For more, notes from ITUP’s November 15th conference call with federal officials from CMS regarding this grant and today’s story in California Healthline.
