California Requests Waiver Extension

As you know, the state and the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are currently negotiating the details of California’s proposal to extend our current ยง1115 waiver for an additional five years. Our current waiver expires on August 31 – in 11 days!

Update! Yesterday, the state sent a letter to CMS requesting a two-month extension of the current waiver.

The CA Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) reports that they have made significant progress in negotiations with CMS and fully expect approval of the extension request. There are, however, some unresolved issues between the state and CMS, including the total amount of federal funds the state will receive and which Medicaid rules will be waived in the new Coverage Initiatives. Nonetheless, DHCS remains confident that these will be resolved before the end of this extension period.
